COURSE SESSIONS

Storytelling for Social Justice: Empowering Diversity and Equity in Education

Introduction

Stories shape how we see the world—and each other. This course empowers educators to use storytelling and drama as transformative tools for promoting equity, amplifying diverse voices, and fostering inclusive, socially just classrooms across educational contexts.

Description

This course explores storytelling and drama pedagogy as powerful approaches to advancing social justice, diversity, and equity in education. Grounded in critical pedagogy and inclusive education frameworks, it equips educators with practical strategies to facilitate dialogue, challenge bias, and amplify underrepresented voices through creative expression. Participants will engage in experiential learning processes, including narrative development, role-play, and performance-based inquiry, to examine issues such as identity, marginalisation, and representation. The course fosters reflective practice and ethical awareness, supporting educators in creating safe and inclusive learning environments. By integrating storytelling with participatory theatre methods, the programme enhances learners’ empathy, critical thinking, and civic engagement, aligning with Erasmus+ priorities of inclusion, democratic participation, and social responsibility.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Critically analyse concepts of equity, diversity, inclusion, and social justice in education

  • Apply storytelling and drama-based methodologies to explore social issues in the classroom

  • Facilitate inclusive learning environments that value diverse identities and perspectives

  • Recognise and address bias, stereotypes, and representation in educational narratives

  • Design participatory learning experiences that promote empathy and perspective-taking

  • Use performance and creative expression to support student voice and agency

  • Integrate social justice themes into curriculum design across subjects

  • Develop reflective practices to support ethical and inclusive teaching

  • Plan and implement storytelling-based projects aligned with Erasmus+ priorities

Methodology and Assessment

The course adopts an experiential, learner-centred methodology combining drama pedagogy, collaborative learning, and reflective practice. Participants engage in workshops, group projects, and performance-based activities. Assessment is formative and continuous, based on active participation, peer feedback, reflective journals, and the design of a final classroom application project.

Materials, Digital Tools & Other Learning Resources

Participants will use a range of materials including scripts, case studies, and multimedia storytelling resources. Additional resources include reflective journals, video examples, and open-access educational content on inclusive and drama-based pedagogy.

Preparation

After registration participants will receive pre-course questionnaire which will be used by the trainer to learn about participants’ teaching backgrounds and to assess their exact needs. Before the beginning of the course a basic reading list will be suggested to participants to prepare for the training. Participants will also be asked to prepare a presentation about themselves, their professional context and their culture which will be presented during the course. Participants will receive information about the country they are going to visit in order to prepare them for their cultural experience.

Follow up

After the course participants will be asked to share what they have learned with the rest of the staff in their schools. Further books and articles to deepen the topic and contacts with some other practitioners all over Europe and in the world will be suggested by the trainer. The methods shared and explored and the bibliography given will allow the participants to complete and improve their educational path.

Certificate

Each participant will get a course attendance certificate and on request we will complete the Europass Mobility Document.
